Looking for a great mission opportunity for your church, school, or business? Want to find a way to change not just one life, but hundreds of lives?

Then consider sponsorship through Lifeline Haiti – not just sponsorship of a single child, but sponsorship of a whole school. By getting together with colleagues, classmates, or congregation members and donating $2,500 a month, you can keep the doors of a school open. And you can ensure that approximately 300 children who are depending on education as their key to a better life will not have to close their books and go home.

Without help, school closure is a real possibility. Since the 2010 earthquake, the cost of food, fuel, and other essentials in Haiti have gone up nearly 40 per cent. As a result, Lifeline Haiti is struggling to make ends meet, and is facing the temporary closure of up to 50 of its 56 schools if funds don’t come in.

Hopefully, the funding crisis will only be temporary. We are working hard to create self-sustaining businesses on the ground in Haiti that will support the charity’s operations so it isn’t as dependent on donations. For example, the Lifeline Haiti cinder block plant that is already up and operating in Chabin should eventually be able to support up to 10 schools. And the coffee plantation Lifeline Haiti is hoping to establish in the Bai d’Orange area of the country could support between 40 and 50 schools, several years from now. We are also hopeful that the Haitian government will soon release some of the foreign aid money dedicated for the redevelopment of the country, and that we will receive some funding that way.

But in the meantime, many of the children at Lifeline Haiti schools are facing the real possibility of seeing their school shut its doors. And that would be devastating, especially since these children have no other option for education., and for many of them this is their only source for a hot meal. In Haiti, government-run schools charge $100 U.S. in tuition – more than many families earn in a year. Lifeline Haiti not only offers families an affordable way to give their children an education, but we are giving them hope for the future. Statistics show, for example, that if a girl finishes her primary school education, her own children will have a 60 per cent better chance of survival than if she had not been educated at all.

Thanks to our ongoing support from Chad & Tim and their work with Kids Against Hunger, we are still getting shipments of food – enough to give each child in a Lifeline Haiti school one hot meal a day. They are working hard to provide us with one million meals this year. To feed all of our 14,000 children this year we are needing 4 million meals. It’s not enough – we need to keep fostering the hope that only education can bring.

So if you’ve ever had a desire to take on a mission project, but weren’t sure where to start, here’s your chance. For $2,500 a month, you can keep an entire school on its feet. We will send you photos and updates on how your school is doing, and someday, maybe you’ll even choose to visit Haiti and meet the students at “your” school firsthand. Update Manitoba trip

Dear friends... we had a wonderful trip to Manitoba... it was great to see many of you that have been supporting out mission in Haiti... we had meetings at the University of Winnipeg, St. Mary's Academy, and others in Selkirk, Steinback, Winkler & Cascade Colony ... we are excited to announce the partnership we have with the University of Winnipeg with there Lost Prize Program... Professor Dave Bell will be our University Professor and Student Coordinator for Lifeline Haiti... bellfrit@mymts.net ... as you look at the picture, Dave is on the left and the Dean/Professor, Faculty of Education for the University of Winnipeg is Ken McCluskey, PhD is on the right side of the picture..."Kari McCluskey, Community Liaison Worker with Interlake School Division, will be supporting our efforts to connect with the public schools."

Below is an outline of the goal and objectives of the Lost Prize Program...

OBJECTIVES OF LOST PRIZES INITIATIVES

- To use research to guide and inform planning, and employ best practices in the gifted education and at-risk domains.

-To establish innovative academic and social programs to identify and develp the talents of high-ability, at-risk young people.

-To help the students learn more effective coping and problem solving strategies.

-To take a strength-based rather than a deficit approach for vulnerable youth.

-To embrace and respond to the diverse set of student needs and challenges.

-To encourage staff to become "talent spotters," who lok for positives in their students on a daily basis.

-To develop the skills of educators working with marginalized young people.

-To utilize a variety of assessment strategies to gauge and improve student academic and social progress in tangible and specific ways.

-To share lessons learned with the field (through P.D. sessions, courses, and publications.)

STAGES OF TRAINING FOR INTERNATIONAL SITES

- Initial, on-site training. Educators in partnering countries will receive training from University of Winnipeg faculty and staff (and from some prvincial and international "program associates".

- Start-up guidance, direction, and mentoring. After our foreign partners have been prepared for the challenge, seasoned veteran administrators from Manitoba will work in the school or alternative program - for one to two years - to help set the tone, overcome initial obstacles, and provide tangible, in-the-trenches assistance.

- Assumption of full responsibility. After the periods of training and mentoring have been completed, our partners will take full charge of the schools and programs in their country.

- Follow up. In an effort to prevent gradual programmatic erosion and deterioration, Manitoba educators will provide on-going follow up and assistance as necessary. To ensure sustainability, younger, prepared-at-UW teachers will be training to carry on the work over the long term (as the seasoned veterans and project initiators take the time to secure the gains by, in effect, replacing themselves).

CINDER BLOCK PLANT ---- CHABIN

Dear friends... we have just returned from speaking engagements in Manitoba... photo's are of the cinder block plant at our Chabin location... photo of the gate going into the plant, the cinder block press, finished cinder blocks and the piles of crushed rock... this has been a long process but so worth it.. we will be able to produce 1500 cinder blocks per day... thank you to all that made donations to help us complete this project... UPATE ON CINDER BLOCK PLANT --- CHABIN

Dear Friends... This has been a long time in the making but finally starting to take shape... the rock crusher is in place at the plant and it is working great.. our new gravel truck is picking up rock to run through the crusher... we sell the finished product locally... this will take place till our equipment has been mounted... we have all the equipment on site but our skid steer is down and we haven't been able to find any equipment that is able to pick up and put in place the cement mixer and the block press... this hopefully will happen soon as we are waiting for parts for the skid steer... thank you to each that have made the project come together... I will post updates on the other equipment as soon as it is in operation... Thank you for making a difference... one load of sand at a time.....

Dear friends.. we are pleased to announce two Dr.'s have come along side to work with us in Haiti... Dr. Tiffany who has been a friend of our projects for several years.. the photo is of her and several of our students in Savanette... we have a link on our web site ... www.haitivillagehealth.ca ..Ruth, a long time assistant of Dr. Tiffany from the Jacmel area will also be helping with medical teams as they come in to help with our projects... Dr. Tiffany is from Easter Canada and also has a clinic in the Bahamas...

I met Dr. Ken Pierce last year.. Ken's wife Diane is a nurse.. they will have their clinic set up at our Kabic location... I will be setting up links on my web site but in the mean time you can check out their sites

Both of these Dr.'s and their projects are a division of Lifeline Haiti and will be doing their fund raising through our office in Lethbridge with the tax receipts coming from our umbrella organization... Bridges of Hope..

Dear friends... one of our teams that came into Haiti with me was Garry and Kelly, Charlie & Priscilla and Cliff . ... Garry & Kelly wrote the following report..

WOW. What an amazing continuation of the story in Haiti. Over a year ago I was there a few weeks after the earthquake and amazed at what I saw. Lives lost, homes shattered, families obliterated and yet the people had a resolve to go on. I had never been exposed to a culture so poor in wealth before, never mind one that had experienced such devastation. I went there to help but found their resiliency and desire to rebuild and go forward encouraged me. Now after going a little more than a year later, the hearts and efforts of all the people through lifeline have made changes I wouldn't have thought possible. Little children that were starving and playing in muddy , garbage filled streets and that were dying of disease and starvation are laughing and playing in school yards and playgrounds that didn't exist before. The orphange my wife and I stayed at had about 30 chilren there and I think half of them were preschool. I asked the head of the orphanage how many of them would have died had there not been intervention. He thought for a minute and replied that probably all of them except for a couple. I wish all of you that have supported this orphange through Lifeline Haiti could see what your support has done. We talked to junior high and high school students that were just trying to survive a year ago and now are being clothed and fed and educated. Their eyes sparkle as they share their dreams of someday becoming teachers and mechanics and lawyers. It is not just life changing. It's life saving. Like Bob Davisson always says. 'changing one life at a time'. There is so much more to be done but there are also miracles being done every day as we in North America continue to change lives

Team making difference at Orphanage

Dear friends... following is a report from the team that went to help this summer... thank you for making a difference... Alexa, Andrea and team...

We were relieved to be greeted by Wisner and friends right in the airport. They helped us with our bags and they had the vehicles waiting for us inside the airport fence. It was a very smooth process! Driving through Port-Au-Prince we could see that there had been some improvements since last year but it was still a city in trouble. Outside of the city, we were all blown away by the beautiful mountainside drive to Jacmel. The mission house in Jacmel was equipped with bunk beds so we could all stay together. We were welcomed with warm hospitality. We knew our trip would go fast so we got right down to business in planning out our week with Pastor that first evening. The biggest project we wanted to make happen was to build a playground on the orphanage grounds. Christ the King church in Shaunavon, SK graciously donated the funds to have it built with leftover monies going towards the finishing of the fence. Both the fence and the playground will help to keep the children safe and within the view of their caregivers. We did a number of painting projects at the orphanage including a banner for outside created partially by our Canadian students and partially by the orphans. We also painted a large mural upstairs in the children's area as well as the bedroom doors. The kids were very intrigued by the paint so they were each able to make their own creation using small canvasses we had brought with us from Canada. It was their first painting experience! We took a some time away from the orphanage to go to Basin Bleu. It was one of the most beautiful places we had ever seen. Our guides were extremely helpful in our hike and descent to the main basin. We enjoyed a swim and a jump off a waterfall into its crisp, blue waters. Our free hours were spent playing with and caring for the children. They all seemed much happier and healthier than year before thanks to some great caregivers. The playground was being finished in our last minutes at the orphanage. Although it was a frustrating project at times, due to the language barrier and lack of playgrounds for examples in Jacmel, it was so worthwhile to see the children so happy to play on it. It was a beautiful sight to see! Thank you Christ the King!!!

Technical problems...

Hi Everyone... sorry we have been having technical problems with our site ... all is working now and will have updates following... the children start school this coming week in Haiti... we have 14,022 children registered at our 56 schools... it has been a huge challenge raising enough funds to open all the schools.. I'll post some of needs in a later post... thanks to all that have continued their support through prayers and finances... thank you to the teams that have gone in and made a difference... I'll have pictures on later posts also.. thank you to Christopher that put a lot of work into a fund raiser we had in Calgary this last Thursday... the playground the team from Medicine Hat and Shaunavon had built at the orphanage has been a huge success.. we have room to expand at this location and also to build the same at some of our school locations...report from Tim & Chad from Minniapolis that 550,000 meals will be arriving in PAP this coming week... we will need a total of 4.3 million meals this year ... I hope to have more reports posted in this coming week...

HAITI IS A DRAMATIC COUNTRY in its terrain, history, and culture. In comparison with other countries in the Caribbean, Haiti is described in superlatives: it is the most rural in its settlement pattern, the poorest, and the most densely populated. It is also the only country in the region that was born of a successful slave rebellion, and it is the first modern black republic.

Many observers have described Haitian society as stagnant, but in recent years, changes have begun. By the 1980s, the population of Haiti surpassed 5 million. Although the country continued to be overwhelmingly rural, urbanization was accelerating as the impact of soil erosion and land fragmentation on agricultural productivity forced increasing numbers of peasants to migrate to Port-au-Prince and even overseas. The population of Port-au-Prince was expected to reach 1 million by the end of the 1980s. Haiti's peasants had traditionally relied on the extended family and cooperative labor as a means for taking care of each other, but by the late 1980s, this aspect of the culture had disintegrated. Deteriorating economic conditions were forcing the poor to find new ways to eke out a living from the land, or to survive in urban slums. An unstable, but politically significant, black middle class had emerged between the traditional, mainly mulatto, elite and the peasantry. Migration and the penetration of foreign missions and nongovernmental organizations to the more remote parts of Haiti created new kinds of relationships with the outside world. The transportation and the communications systems had been greatly improved, and Creole-language radio brought news of domestic and international affairs to the country's isolated villages.

The weight of the past bore heavily on the daily lives of all Haitians in the 1980s. The country's legacy of slavery and French colonization had left a lasting imprint on the culture. In the past, members of the upper class cherished Franco-Haitian culture because the French language and manners separated them from the masses whom they wished to rule. At the same time, former slaves created a peasant culture, but always in the shadow of their urban superiors. Haiti's dual cultural heritage resulted in negative attitudes toward Haitian peasant life, particularly toward the Creole language, traditional marriages, and voodoo, the folk religion. The recent emergence of a middle class has only exacerbated the debate over what should be considered "true" Haiti.

SCHOOL IN BAIE D'ORANGE

Dear friends.. On this trip into our mission in Haiti.. a 3 hrs. rough ride from Jacmel to the region called Baie d'Orange... if you remember from one of my earlier postings I had explained how we were in such need at this school in Baie d'Orange.. only one book per class, no desks, tarp for a roof, unable to pay the teachers, etc... that was 5 weeks prior to this trip... since that posting we have since had funds donated to cover the cost to operate this school for the next year... most of the uniforms have been made, the tarp has been replaced with tents... they have desks and books and are getting a hot meal each day... teachers are being paid... the food was donated to us from EVERYONE at Prairie Gleaners from Medicine Hat, Ab. and their supporters .. .... thank you to everyone for making a difference.. one child at a time...it was amazing to see the difference from the previous trip...

Water system for Jacmel

will be raising the funds for a water system for our Jacmel location... water is a huge need for the country of Haiti... they will be bringing in a system that will do a reverse osmosis purifying the water... we will have a location along the main street in Jacmel where we will sell this water.. funds raised will help with our costs of running our orphanage, and schools in Jacmel and surrounding area... Cam collected water at the pumping station where we purchase the water and haul with our water trucks to various locations throughout Jacmel and area... this water was then taken to a Lab in North America to check to see what is needed for the equipment in the purification process... Cam brought many soccer balls and soccer equipment for the children...thank you to all that helped with the soccer balls and equipment... thanks also to Nature Zone and all your supporters for making a difference... one child at a time... there will be more photo's to follow as they system is brought into the country and hooked up...

Water System for Savanette

Savanette is a location where we started our second school... the water system is a vision of Donny Mowatt, from Camberland Bay, New Brunswick... here is a short version of how it came together... Don was the one who started it then during the year he brought others into it namely his grandson Donnie Ferris & Sheldon Spencer who did all the GPS work, surveying, laying the pipe line and hooking it up to the reservoir (Sheldon doing the GPS work) these two have went three years getting all the information needed, this year Jody Graham (Renew Canada.com) where the solar system was purchased by Don, and he went to Haiti this year and installed it, Armand Cormier (Armlin@rogers.com) operates a Geo Thermal business he was interested in the project and wanted to go with Don this year, he was a valuable asset with getting water hooked up to the pump and helped with the solar panels, these four men were very professional and helpful to Don. Three years ago Don began this on his own and met many barriers also a great expense. Brad Howland from Easyclean in Sussex donated all the pipe and the pump which was a great help.
Thank you Don and team for making such a huge difference in the lives of the people in the Savanette region...

Dear friends.. short note to say hi... all has been going great.. the teams have been amazing.. construction of the mission house at the orphanage is coming along great... we leave early tomorrow morning for Savanette.. all day hike there and back and then on Tuesday we go to Baie d'Orange where we have the land for our coffee plantation ...this is also a full day of travel... also to bless the school with books and uniforms... our teams from Canada and from Minniapolis are doing great.. excited about our remote trips tomorrow and the next day.. we will be out of range of the internet till Wednesday... had a wonderful connection with a team from The Czeck Republic that are wanting to providing a service for our schools.. reports to follow on this ...

Dear friends.. short update from Haiti... we hope all is well at your place... we have been having an amazing time.... everyone is doing great.. there is so much work being done since my last trip in.. ... the Hosanna Church in Minneapolis ... Wayne and His son Robert with their sponsored child from our Chabin school... Evelyn being introduced to her little girl also from the Chabin school...
.. there are large numbers of tanks from the UN patrolling the streets... we are safe..

Dear friends... we had a safe tip to Haiti ... only missing one suitcase.. going to find things for Evelyn to replace what was in her suitcase.... Evelyn is from Steinback who has dreamed of going on a mission trip for years.. she will be celebrating her 86th birthday soon... Wayne and his son Robert from P.E.I. are with us... Wayne was in one of the recruits in 9 Troop in 1978.. I was the Troop Counselor back then.... the Minneapolis team arrived also last night from the Hosanna Lutheran Church...we are seeing so many things that are improving since our last trip just over a month ago... again so many teams are here.. met a team of 50 this morning... lots of construction happening.. so good to see...

DEAR FRIENDS.. AT OUR BAIE D'ORANGE SCHOOL IN THE MOUNTAINS TOWARDS THE DOMINICAN ABOUT 2.5 HR. DRIVE FROM JACMEL... IT IS THE FIRST TIME I GOT TO SEE THE CHILDREN AT THEIR SCHOOL... I HAD MET MANY OF THEM ON OTHER VISITS BUT THE FIRST TIME AT THE SCHOOL.. I FEEL BAD WE CAN'T DO MUCH FOR THEM AT THIS TIME... WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO PROVIDE THEM ONE BOOK PER CLASS AND THE TEACHERS VOLUNTEER TILL WE CAN RAISE THE FUNDS TO HELP...WE FEED WHEN WE HAVE THE FOOD AVAILABLE.. EVEN WITH THE LITTLE WE CAN DO THE CHILDREN ARE SO HAPPY... THIS IS THE AREA WE HAVE PURCHASED THE LAND FOR OUR COFFEE PLANTATION..IT IS AT ABOUT THE 4,OOO FOOT LEVEL.. IT COOLS OFF VERY MUCH AT NIGHT IN THIS AREA... THE SOIL WILL BE BROKE IN MAY AND THE TREES PLANTED AT THAT TIME.. THAT IS WHEN THE RAINY SEASON IS AT FULL SWING... IT WILL BE 4 YRS. BEFORE WE CAN PICK OUR FIRST HARVEST OF COFFEE BEANS.. THE PROFITS FROM THE COFFEE WILL GO BACK INTO THIS AREA FOR TWO SCHOOLS... IN THE MEAN TIME WE NEED HELP TO HELP THESE CHILDREN.. IF YOUR CHURCH OR ORGANIZATION FEELS IN YOUR HEART TO HELP ... THIS WOULD BE A PERFECT PROJECT... $18,000. per year would put 200 children through school for one year.. this provides, uniforms, books, medicine, clean drinking water, teachers salaries (9 teachers), desks and a hope for the future.. the coffee plantation will provide about 30 jobs in the area and at times 50...THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE... I'M FEELING STRONG AGAIN... THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT DROPPED ME A NOTE ON FACE BOOK WITH BIRTHDAY WISHES AND CHAMPION OF CHANGE AWARD... SORRY I WAS ABLE TO ANSWER EACH ONE INDIVIDUALLY... I FELL LIKE THE MOST BLESSED GUY IN THE WORLD TO GET TO DO WHAT I DO AND HAVE THE MOST AMAZING FAMILY AND FRIENDS...

THE FIRST TEAM INTO HAITI WITH US ON THIS TRIP WAS A TEAM MOSTLY FROM THE FREE GRACE CHURCH IN LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA... I HAD SHARED AT THEIR CHURCH A FEW TIME ABOUT 7 YRS. AGO AND HAVE KEPT IN CLOSE CONTACT EVER SINCE.. IT WAS AWESOME TO HAVE A TEAM OF 11 COME IN TO HELP... THEY BUILT 19 RAFTERS 40 FT. LONG FOR OUR CARFOUR RAYMOND SCHOOL.. THIS IS A SCHOOL WE HAD TO STOP CONSTRUCTION ON A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO BECAUSE OF LACK OF FUNDS.. THEY HAVE BEEN USING TARPS AND TENTS IN THE MEAN TIME.. IT WAS AMAZING TO SEE HOW FAST THIS WENT UP.. IN ABOUT 4 DAYS THEY HAD THE STRUCTURE UP AND SHEETED IN.. THE CELEBRATION FOR THE LOCAL PEOPLE WAS ON THE SUNDAY MORNING JUST AFTER COMPLETING IT ON SATURDAY... DEAR FRIENDS.. IT IS A WORK OF ENGINEERING MARVEL TO GET THE WATER FROM A SPRING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BACK OF THE MOUNTAIN AT OUR SAVANETTE LOCATION UP TO OUR SCHOOL... IT IS A ONE MILE LINE WITH ABOUT A 2000 FT. FOOT ELEVATION FROM THE SPRING TO THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN.. THIS HAS BEEN ON DONNIE'S HEART FOR SEVERAL YEARS TO GET WATER UP TO THE SAVANETTE SCHOOL AND VILLAGE.. THE PEOPLE IN THE AREA WOULD CARRY WATER UP THE MOUNTAIN IN 5 GALLON PAILS EVERY DAY... Dear friends... just a short note to say Hi and to thank everyone for their e-mails and face book notes.. I read each one but just didn't have time to respond to each one... each of you are an inspiration to us... if you sent me a request and I didn't get back to you, please drop me another note.. the children and staff in Haiti are so excited about the recognition and the donation from Manulife Financial and Champions of Change.... this will be a huge help.. it came at just the right time... the need is still huge, so please donate if you can... Miles & Rosemary will be going down with me on this trip... a team from Free Grace Church out of Lethbridge will be in Haiti for two weeks with me and a team from the Urban Refuge and Evergreen Churches in the Minneapolis area will be there for one week..... we are looking forward to an exciting and productive trip.. thanks again to everyone that has been such a huge blessing with your support through donations, votes, prayers and those that came down to help in Haiti... next trip is the middle of March.. we are filled up with teams for the March trip.. we are trying to make up for the teams that we had to cancel in Nov... you all are such an inspiration and blessing to us... next teams will be in the fall.. book early if you are wanting to go...

WE ARE SO GREAT FULL THAT ALL OUR CHILDREN ARE SAFE AND NONE OF THEM HAVE BEEN SICK... THE SANITATION PROGRAM WE RUN AT OUR SCHOOLS HAS PROVEN TO BE EFFECTIVE TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF THIS DISEASE IN OUR OUR SCHOOLS.. PROVIDING CLEAN DRINKING WATER HAS BEEN ALSO A KEY FACTOR... This is a note I got from the company about one of the smaller systems....

I worked on some numbers for you regarding what the water will cost.
Depending your cost to get the system to Haiti and how much water you
have available to filter, at 50% of capacity or 1,314,000 gallons for
the first year your cost would be about $.01 per gallon. That would
fully amortize the initial cost of the unit ($10,000 FOB Jacksonville,
FL.) and installation in Haiti. After that at 50% capacity the cost
per gallon would drop to less than $.002 per gallon.
If the people can come to a central location and get
their water then a larger system could be used. AquaVast has built
systems with 20 gallons and 100 gallons per minute capacities. Those
systems would be need to be placed in a permanent installation. The
other problem would be the amount of water available. The water
source can be any non salt water regardless of how polluted it is.
The system will remove all bacteria and virus. The inventor is working
on systems that could use salt water, but they are not currently
available.

There is, at present, no effective vaccine against cholera. The only way to prevent its spread is to interrupt the fecal-oral cycle of contagion. The ways MSF teams do this include:

* providing health education on how to prevent diarrhea including hand-washing, disposal of feces
* Providing education on boiling water and or setting up adequate supplies of safe water. The minimum quantity required in an emergency population is 10 liters per person per day.
* Provision of soap.
* Providing education on proper disposal of human waste while working on the construction of pit latrines in the whole country. The minimum number required in an emergency situation is 1 latrine per 20 people.
* Begin immediate shelter reconstruction to relocate tents inhabitants
* Begin long term reconstruction of the country's infrastructure

OVERVIEW: In 1817, a new and terrible disease moved out of Bengal and began to spread across the world. It caused profuse diarrhea and vomiting, and its sufferers died of profound dehydration, sometimes within a matter of hours. By the end of the nineteenth century it had killed many hundreds of thousands of people across Asia and then Russia, Europe, and the Americas. Like many diseases it was given a Greek name... cholera. The word means diarrhea.

Now, at the end of the 20th Century, the world is being circled by the seventh great pandemic of cholera. More than 60 countries report outbreaks each year. In recent years, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams have battled the disease in places as diverse as Guinea in West Africa, Guatemala and Peru in Latin America, and Bangladesh in southern Asia.

How cholera kills

The bacteria Vibrio cholerae is excreted by an infected person in the stools and vomit. It can then be spread directly to other people if they touch the patient and then fail to wash their hands before eating. The germ can also contaminate food or water supplies. In the latter case this will cause an explosive outbreak because many people will ingest the vibrion in a short period of time.

Once inside the intestine, the organism multiplies and produces a toxin. This toxin causes the cells lining the intestine to secrete massive volumes of fluid and leads to diarrhea and vomiting. A patient under treatment can lose more than 50 liters of fluid during a bout of cholera.

A person who is not treated will die of dehydration well before this. In fact, death usually occurs when 10 to 15 per cent of the total body weight is lost. In severe cases this may take only a couple of hours.

There is, at present, no effective vaccine against cholera. The only way to prevent its spread is to interrupt the fecal-oral cycle of contagion. The ways MSF teams do this include:

* providing health education on how to prevent diarrhea. The messages include hand-washing, disposal of feces and protection of household water stocks.
* provision of soap.
* working with the community to ensure they have pit latrines. The minimum number required in an emergency situation is 1 latrine per 20 people.
* setting up adequate supplies of safe water. The minimum quantity required in an emergency population is 10 liters per person per day. In all of these preventive activities, MSF water and sanitation engineers and logisticians have a vital role to play - just as important as the role of doctors and nurses.

For example, during the floods in Bangladesh in 1998, many thousands of water wells across the country became contaminated by the rising waters. Cholera vibrios were washed down the pump shafts into the water table below. The greatest danger came after the flood waters started to recede, when people went home and began using their wells again. Part of the health education given by MSF teams to villagers was instruction on how to disinfect their wells.
How MSF teams treat cholera patients

Cholera is treatable. The main pathological process it causes is dehydration - therefore the treatment we use is simply to replace all the fluid being lost.

MSF treats many patients using oral re-hydration solution, called ORS. This is a mixture of glucose and electrolytes (such as sodium and potassium). The solution is stirred into a liter of water and provides the correct balance of electrolytes to re-hydrate a cholera patient. It has been said that in global terms, ORS is the most important medical discovery since penicillin.

Many of our cholera patients vomit so profusely that they cannot drink ORS. MSF therefore treats serious cases by putting in intravenous drips. These IV infusions contain fluid and electrolytes. Some patients lose fluid so quickly that they need two drips, one in each arm. Treating serious cases requires a high degree of skill and experience. Why not vaccines in Haiti? Oral cholera vaccines

There are two vaccines
that
give up to 90 percent protection against cholera - at least in the
short term. But don't expect them to get widespread use to contain
Haiti's current cholera epidemic.

Dr. Jon Andrus
is deputy director of the Pan American Health Organization
and a vaccination
specialist. He explained why cholera vaccine isn't the answer to
Haiti's problem at a Wednesday teleconference
.

NPR asked Andrus if the vaccine might be useful in targeted
populations in advance of new outbreak in Port-au-Prince. Such a "ring
vaccination
" strategy was critical in eradicating smallpox.

Andrus explained that ring vaccination worked in smallpox because
everyone who was infected had symptoms. So when a new case or a small
cluster popped up, it meant other people without symptoms were not yet
infected and were still eligible for a vaccine.

But with cholera, by the time the disease shows up, 80 percent of
people are carrying it - but without any symptoms.

"The horse is out of the barn," Andrus says, "so you can't determine
with any accuracy where that bacterium is circulating...You already
have transmission outside your ring."

There are other reasons why cholera vaccination isn't recommended
during an outbreak. It requires two doses in most people, and three in
young children. Keeping track of who's been vaccinated and getting
them back for a second and third dose presents enormous logistical
problems and a lot of personnel. And even with all that effort, it
still takes three weeks at the least for immunity to build in the
body, Andrus says.

The effort to mount a crash vaccination campaign would also surely
detract from other public health measures known to be effective, like
educating people about hand-washing and handing out safe water, soap
and oral rehydration . Such
measures prevent infections and reduce fatality rates to around 1
percent
.

"Measures to prevent and treat this disease are so effective...that we
don't vaccinate our own staff on the ground or staff we're sending
there," Andrus says.

Having said all that, though, Andrus says PAHO is discussing whether
to vaccinate some populations beyond the current reach of the
outbreak.

But one big problem is the supply of cholera vaccine. There may be
only 200,000 or so doses of Dukoral
,
the only vaccine that's been approved by WHO as safe. PAHO is trying
to find out if the other vaccine, Shanchol
, is
available in bigger quantities. (It's expected to get the green light
from WHO, but it's not clear when.)

So there may be an argument for using one or both vaccines in some
Haitians in the path of cholera. PAHO and Haitian authorities will
need to make that decision soon.

HARD DRIVE SAVED/AND MORE NOV. 4/2010

Dear friends, Good news from the tech at London Drugs.. Apple sent a new hard drive and all my info was retrieved.... what a relief.. today everything will be back up by a friend that has the know how..

Haiti is preparing for a direct hit from this hurricane coming their way...please pray for their safety.. some 2 ft. of rain could hit the mountain areas which will be devastating in the lower areas..all of our schools that are made of cement will be full to protect the precious people from the storm...there are the dangers of mud slides and streams that turn into torrent rivers... in the past there have been villages buried in the mud slides with thousands of lives lost.. since then they go to high ground when there is an announcement of a hurricane coming their way...

Our banquet on Thursday evening last week was a huge blessing.. sorry we had to turn so many people away as we were filled to the max. of 200... next one will be at a larger facility.. thanks to everyone that helped, especially Alexa and Crissy doing all the organizing and all the sponsors that donated items for the auction ... this was such a huge encouragement as many more children will be able to attend school this year as we raised nearly $20,000. Dear friends, I hope everyone is doing well.. sorry it took so long for an update.. just after I got back home on the 20th. my computer crashed so haven't been able to get to an update.. the tech at London Drugs is trying to retrieve all my info off my hard drive... I had even bought a hard drive awhile back for back up .... I had everything on my computer to do with our mission in Haiti but just didn't take the time to do it....a little overwhelming to us older guys when it comes to these types of gadgets... won't happen again... will find out tomorrow how much he was able to retrieve.. besides that I am trying to get rested up ... our banquet is nearly sold out for Thursday.. not only did we get a signed Saskatchewan Rough Rider Jersey from Keith Shologan but we got a signed Edmonton Oilers Jersey from Steve MacIntyre ... these will be hot items for the auction...

We have canceled all our teams from going to Haiti until it becomes safer not only from the disease that has broken out but the rioting that has been happening... we will probably look at the next teams going down after the Government takes power in Feb... I will be going back around the 15th of Nov... if things settle down before Feb. we will considering opening it up for teams again... sorry for those that had been so longing forward to going in Nov., Dec. & Jan...

Dear friends... we hope this note finds everyone well... it has been an amazing time with lots of hard work... the team helped with unloading a sea can today ... what a challenge as the sea cans were unloaded at the port by the custom inspectors and every box was opened and everything examined... the boxes that were made out of wood were taken apart and the boards scattered throughout the trailer... then when it arrived the trailer had to be unloaded at night time at our location so they could pry the sea can off the trailer and then it reloaded still at night time... so going through them was a huge challenge... we have been building shelving to store things inside and have some kind of order.. much has been delivered to the orphanage and schools already but there is still much to distribute... and another container to sift through and organize... thank you to everyone that sent everything they could think of... in the pictures you will see we had help from the children and adults at Chabin... two of the guys from Coastal Church flew back home today... the rest of the team leave Monday and then the rest of us fly home on Tuesday... more to follow.. everyone is doing great.. no one sick.. thanks for your prayers and all the support for making a difference... one child at a time...

Dear friends, We are all well and enjoying serving the people of Haiti.. all our schools are in session where we have been able to supply some kind of covering with tents or tarps... it has been challenging to say the least... not enough support to pay all the teachers and support staff but we are still working on that... Pastor Placide and myself are in Port au Prince over for a couple of days wrapping things to do with immigration, customs and picking up Don & Linda from Brooks today... I drove our van for the first time and it runs great, has lots of power to get through the mountains... it is a diesel with a 5 speed standard... this will be a huge asset for us for picking up teams at the airport in Port au Prince...

The team has been working hard, painting and building bunk beds... the rains have let off for the last couple of days and have left us with very hot days... around 36 to 38C..

Dear friends... Everyone is well ... the team has been a huge help.. just some pictures show some of what is happening.. the team painted the front of our mission house in Cayes Jacmel... the tents are from Winkler that are so need for a school or ours at Carfour Raymond where 200 children will be attending starting this Monday...... thank you Winkler team for the tents as they will be used for much needed classroom throughout the country....we put up 8 tents at this location... pictured are a couple of men cutting up a log into planks...they sawed all day.... and pictures at the orphanage as some of the team got to spend the day there today and a I got a big hug from the children... two more team members arrive from the Coastal Church tomorrow.. we will building bunk beds and painting along with some electrical and plumbing... Don & Linda arrive on Tuesday from Brooks, Alberta....we pray everyone has a safe Thanksgiving week-end..

Dear friends, It was a beautiful day here in Haiti with the temperature right around 36... got to the job sites and got the lumber and paint ordered.. went to each of the job sites to see what parts we needed for the plumbing and electrical... the team got to our Chabin school which is now in session.. many of the children haven't started yet as word has to travel into the mountain areas as they don't have calandre...within the next two weeks the classrooms will be full... some of the children walk up to 3 hrs. each way so it will be awhile before word gets out to their areas... pictures of of some of the children in class on the team from Coastal (Noushin) with some of the children... three of the team speak French which helps a little... tomorrow we will start painting and doing some plumbing and a visit to the orphanage... it was awesome seeing the children having a hot meal at the schools today... thanks to each of you for making a difference... Vancourver Coastal Church and more update....

Dear friends... the team from the Vancouver Coastal Church arrived this afternoon ... first team to use our new 18 passengar van... we were able to purchase this vehicle from the funds we made from the work of our water trucks... this will then continue to earn funds for the high school teachers salaries.. this will generate about $1600. per month profit... the water trucks are still busy and the funds raised from them also goes towards the salaries for our high school teachers... school started at most of our schools today.. put up several tents at some locations that don't have a building to help with having classroom space... more to follow.. Dear friends, We pray everyone is well at your end... we have been getting lots of rain the last 4 or 5 days... the pictures attached are just a couple of items that came from our friends in Winkler... what a blessing this has been.. there is much more and I will have more pictures later...

We took two of the team from Minneapolis to Port au Prince yesterday.. I'll take you on the trip with us just to give you a glimpse how things can be down here... we were just leaving Jacmel ready to take the curve to the left onto the straightaway that goes past the Texico when we met a gravel truck, one of the smaller type, that had something under the front of his truck... there were sparks flying and smoke coming from underneath and he had the truck floored as hard as he could go but it was dragging him to a stop... as we got closer to him we could see it was a motor cycle under the front of his truck.. we went about 400 yards and right in front of the Texico was the body of the guy that had been driving the motor cycle... we were the first ones on the scene.... a few people had gathered and the body was twisted badly and he was taking his last breaths.. as a crowd gather some of the young men got tire irons and went to the gravel truck.. the driver had fled because he knew what was coming if he stuck around.. they would have beat him to death if they would have found him... he is probably gone to the Dominican... we had called the police and they arrived shortly after... talking about the police the report is that 650 people have been arrested and are in jail as a result of the police man friend of mine that had been killed last week... just giving you a glimpse of what happens down here...

We spent time in Leogane yesterday and I'll share some of the problems we are having with schools starting this year.. for example in Leogane we had 340 children attending a school in a house that we were renting for $2000. per year.. the house has been repaired since the quake but so many houses are still destroyed so now the demand for housing has gone up to where the rent is now $12,000. for the year which makes it impossible for us to open the school.. we drove down streets where every house on the street was flat to the ground... these were house in the upper class of the city... 85% of the houses were destroyed in Leogane...

On the way back the storms got strong and made the trip through the mountains very interesting to say the least...

For good news we got word yesterday that the Haitian Government is giving us $2500. for two of our schools to help with teachers salaries...this works out to about 4 month salary for the 2 schools... this is a miracle.. they are also going to supply some desks...also the Senator from Jacmel got a hold of Pastor Placide and is having a meeting with us tonight to discuss the problems we had at the port with our containers and all the duties and taxes we had to pay..... he assures us we will get some of the money back that we had to pay... this is another miracle... we are encouraged by these small jesters and are hoping this is just the beginning of what is to come ...

We must keep patient and keep pressing in to help the children...

I haven't been able to get to the internet as often as I would like to give updates... we were able to pick up a new welder in Port au Prince yesterday... thank you to those of you that donated towards this to make it possible.. it has help us up with the construction of our cinder block plant but now we will be able to get our welder Jerome going full speed on construction.. back to PAP today to take Jill and her team back... preparing for the team from Coastal Church to arrive on Tuesday... we have been getting lots of rain over the last few days... Haitian Policeman killed last night 24th

Dear friends... it was a sad day to hear of a friend of mine that was killed the night of the 24th.. it was a full moon night and I can remember in the years of police work there were always crazy things that would happen on the night of a full moon... my friend went to arrest a man during the day and the man came at him with a large bolder to smash him over the head so my fiend shot him in the leg and arm and then took him to the hospital where he is recovering fine.. later in the evening some of the victims family were worked up and showed up at the police station... the other office ran out the back but my friend stayed back to explain to the family what happened.. they didn't wait for an explanation, they just attacked him with machetes and killed him and then set him on fire... in the photo attached he is sitting in the back row with a stripped shirt and a white hat...he is sitting in the picture but is a big man and had a gentle spirit... the cells are now full as many have been arrested... thanks for your prayers... Medical team from Lethbridge

Dear friends.. we were blessed with a number of nurses and a Dr. that came from Alberta.. they held clinics up at Chabin and saw and treated over 80 patients per day for the week... they also visited our orphanage a couple of times.. the children are doing so well.. we had one little girl that was experiencing eye problems... one of the nurses recognized she could be lacking vitamin A and after a couple of days taking vitamin A her eyes cleared up... pictured are some of the nurses with some of the children at the orphanage...

Update Sept.25/2010 from Haiti (Survived the storm)

Dear friends... We are safe and grateful to back in Jacmel after a day in Port au Prince yesterday... we took the Minneapolis team back for their flight and while we were there there was an up expected storm come up.. it must of been part of a hurricane as the winds were tearing off the corrugated steel of buildings and fences and tossing it like Frisbee's .. the rain was coming down sideways with visibility only a matter of meters...the report we got was 5 people were killed and a number of others injured.. Pastor was separated from us picking up something from the hospital... he had these huge sheets of steel flying over him as he was running for cover... even many of the patients left the hospital as they feared an earthquake was going to happen...the roads were partly blocked on the way back home during the night from the landslides... it took over 4 hrs. to get out of Port au Prince... the storm hit Jacmel but not as sever...

UPDATE SEPT. 18/2010 FROM HAITI

Dear friends... this has been the first change to get to catch up on my e-mails and blog... seems to be never ending challenges but with every challenge there is always a solution... sometimes little things can be so irritating... when checking into Air Canada in Montreal on Tuesday morning it turned out one of my suitcases was over by 3 lbs. and the other one was right at the max... the lady wanted to charge me $100. for being overweight by these 3 lbs. .. maybe not such a big deal but $100. would feed 600 children a hot meal here in Haiti... anyway I tried to explain to her the mission we have here in Haiti and if they would waive the charge.. I could not get her to change her mind so I asked for the supervisor... after a short conversation with him he saw it my way and waved the charges.. one small victory.. I don't think he realizes how much money he saved his Airline by doing this as it would have been the last time myself or any of the teams would have flown into Haiti on Air Canada.. there are many other choices...

The teams arrived all the same day on Tuesday, with Miles and Rosemary on the same flight I was on and the medical team from Lethbridge about 1 hr. later.. the Dr. was not able to come because of a death in the family but he is arriving today...
Chad & Tim's team arrived last night from Urban Refuge and Evergreen.. they all pitched there tents on the roof of our school in Chabin.. I will have more updates and pictures in the days to come...

By the time we arrived in Jacmel on Tuesday night it was after midnight and then up at 3:30 AM to go back to PAP to work on the release of the containers.. it proved to be successful as two of the containers arrived last night at Chabin... the Winkler container and the Medicine Hat containers are on our property in Chabin....the third will be release Monday... we have found that there were some items stolen from the containers at the Port in PAP... I guess it is the price a person has to pay for helping in Haiti but it just is not right... besides that they charges us over $20,000. for the 3 containers of which most of it was food for the children...this will be our last containers.. next we will ship over a school bus with with supplies and barge it over from Miami... now the challenge to unload these containers off the trailer.. no equipment like we are use to back home....the trailers don't have rollers or chains...

Also last night three of our staff had to go into Jacmel to get gasoline for the generator for the team staying at Chabin.. Nel, and two of our drivers.. the guy driving my truck is a good driver and operates on of our water trucks..on their way back to Chabin at around midnight they come to a very sharp corner on the road and met a semi that was a runaway.. they moved over as far as possible up against the guard rail but the semi still clipped the front end of our truck.. it was a matter of inches and they would have all been killed...by the time we finished up with the police reports it was around 3AM this morning.. the driver of the semi spent the night in jail... we are so thankful they are safe.. the truck can be repaired...

School Locations and more...

Dear friends, The picture I have added marks the locations of our schools in Haiti.. as it looks right now we will not be able to support all of them financially this year as the funds have not come in to cover operations.. we are doing the best we can with volunteers to open all the schools but we have very few books, no uniforms, unable to pay the teachers and everything else that goes with the operation of a school... we will keep trying to raise the funds and we know in time funds will come in... we can not give up... at our locations where we have sponsors of children we are able to give full support to these schools...
I will be leaving for Haiti next Monday the 13th.. arriving the 14th... we have teams coming in from Lethbridge and Minneapolis.. the team from Lethbridge is a medical team of 11..there are two teams coming in from Minneapolis during the next month, first Chad with a team to help with construction, planting trees and much more and then later Jill will be coming in with a team from Evangelical Free to look at the possibility of helping with the purchasing of some school books in some of the areas where we are needing help... Don & Linda Weisbeck will be coming in to look at the mico loan projects we have going and may get involved in helping run this program.. they are from Brooks.. Don is a former Owner/Operator of a McDonald's Restaurant during the time I did the same and also former Mayor of Brooks...
We are so gratefully for the teachers and staff of the Catholic School Division from Medicine Hat that are providing schools books for 4 of our schools ... this is in honor of Mr. Love who has been a long time teacher and principal here in Medicine Hat.. he was forced into early retirement because of a health problem and in honor of him they took up a collection from the teachers and staff and with this money will be providing schools books to 1200 of our students... there will be more info and pictures on this down the road... We return from Haiti on the 20th of Oct. then returning back again on the 16th of Nov.

Update on containers... still stuck at the port... hopefully they will be released by the time I get there next week.. this has been very frustrating as we have about a million meals in these containers along with building material and tools, tents, blankets and much more... we have been having to purchase food now for some time locally which puts a huge burden on our budget as we did not anticipate to having to purchase food when we knew this food in the containers would be there... they also charge us $40. per day per container while they are at the Port... they are only hurting their own people with these stall tactics... we have had staff going to Port au Prince every day to try to speed up the process...containers have been there since May...

THERE WAS TO BE FUNDING AVAILABLE THIS YEAR TO HELP WITH THE PROJECTS FROM THE HAITIAN GOVERNMENT BUT THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED... THESE FUNDS WERE TO BE SUPPLIED FROM OTHER COUNTRIES AS A RESULT OF THE EARTHQUAKE... MAYBE TOMORROW... WE CAN NEVER GIVE UP HOPE.....

Dear friends, Just a short update ... on my return from my Uncles funeral I got word of a friend that died in Brooks which is about an hours drive from here... He was a friend from my McDonald's days.. he was far too young.. Scott Ives was a great guy... I hope that is it for funerals for a long time...

I wish I had good news to share about our containers that are in Port au Prince on the docks waiting for clearance from Customs... they were going to have it cleared up weeks ago but still nothing... when these things happen they are hoping for bribes from us to get them cleared but we won't go that route... we are now working directly with the Minister of Customs ... sure hope this works... with the elections of Haiti happening at the end of Nov. it is even harder to get anything done through the government as everyone is on the campaign trail and others don't know if they will have a job after the elections... I will post as soon as I get word of the release of the containers and the charges they will demand for them... these are the containers from Winkler, Medicine Hat and Minneapolis...

I will post again next week to give an update on the schools and where we are with the fund raising in hopes to support all 56 schools...

Return from my Sister's Funeral

Dear friends... thanks for your prayers... it was a wonderful celebration of a life of such a precious person... Geraldine was a foster Mom to over 63 special needs children over the last 36 yrs... she was such an inspiration to all that knew her.. she will always have a special place in my heart... Geraldine is the third oldest and the first of the siblings to pass away.. I have 8 brothers and 6 sisters... all are half brothers and sisters... on our return home got word that my Uncle Don passed away today... he had been ill for some time... he lived in Unity, Sask. and will be going to the funeral on Wednesday... A week ago I was up to a funeral for one of my cousins who passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack... Ronny was far too young...

Last night a sister of mine passed away... Geraldine was a precious person with the biggest heart you could imagine.. she was a foster Mom to so many special needs children... she only found out recently she had cancer... Geraldine is a sister from my biological Dad's side of the family.. her funeral is Saturday in Kensella..

This morning a nephew Roland passed away with Cancer ...he also hadn't found out too many months ago... he also was far too young leaving behind a precious wife and 3 children...

While typing this note we received a call from the Winnipeg area where Linda's (my wife) sister Rita has just had a massive heart attack... prognoses does not look good.... Rita is Roland's Mom...

Dear friends.... it has been awhile since my last update.. I have been on the road fund raising and attending some family gatherings... a special thank you for those that have responded to sponsoring a child... this is a huge help... thank you for making a difference... there are still thousands that need sponsors... the three containers that have been sent to Haiti with food, tents, and rebuilding supplies are at the port in Haiti and now tied up in the red tape of customs... hopefully we will have some answers in the next day or two... they are making it so difficult to help this way that we are thinking twice about trying to help this way again... thank you to everyone for your help... we are still in so much need of more financial support to open and support all of our 56 schools... my next trip into Haiti will be departing home on the 13th and arriving in Haiti on the 14th of Sept. and returning on the 20th of Oct.... the next return is expected to be on the 22nd of Nov. returning on the 15th of Dec. We have returned from a wonderful trip to Manitoba meeting with supporters from Selkirk, Steinback, Winkler, Morden and area... I now leave for Slave Lake, Ab. for meetings the 17, 18, & 19th...

HAITI VILLAGE HEALTH

Haiti Village Health currently has projects in Jacmel and Cap Haitian. You can follow our progress on our blog at http://www.haitivillagehealth.blogspot.com/

Regarding our specific work in Jacmel, we will be establishing a new medical clinic in Chabin located just 15 minutes West of the city. The clinic will be constructed on the site of one of the Life Line Haiti schools. http://lifelinehaiti.com/locations.html Teams will stay in Jacmel at the HVH Guest House and will travel daily to the clinic. The clinic will provide basic outpatient services. Any urgent cases will be referred to the government Hospital in Jacmel. There will be full time Haitian staff: physician, nurse, registration clerk and pharmacy technician. Volunteer teams will include four triage stations, two primary care providers , pharmacist/nurse pharmacist and up to four general support staff. Our goal is to supplement the training of the local staff so they can run the clinic independently in the future. This is based on the model we started at our clinic in the North.

We require volunteers for this project. We are in need of physicians, nurses, medical assistants, midwives, PAs, paramedics, pharmacists/pharmacy technicians, lab technologists, ancillary staff, and logistics volunteers. All medical personnel will need to provide a valid medical license. Haiti Village Health Volunteer team trips will be commencing July 26th to Jacmel.

GOOGLE RESOURCE FINDER

Earlier this year I was asked to sit on a working Committee with the US State Department regarding the mapping of Health Facilities in Haiti. This led to improved mapping through the organization Shoreland. Google's site, Resource Finder, will be the public window to Health Facilities in Haiti. Haiti Village Health will be sending field workers out to teach local health care workers how to enter data directly to the database. Namita and our in-country tech guru Patrice Tellyrand will spearhead this project. MSPP (the Department of Health) gave the official go ahead last week and the site will launch shortly.

COMMUNITY CENTER FOR PINCHINAT

We have been working closely with the refugee camp in Jacmel, providing medication and supplies since the earthquake. We have assisted the camp leaders in attending meetings at the United Nations Cluster meetings so that their voice was heard in the decision making process. Together with Calvary Chapel, a Community Center will be built at the local camp. We will facilitate programs operating at the center.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AIR TRANSPORT

We are currently working with three partner organizations to establish a country wide, emergency air transport service for Haiti. Jacmel is on the list as one of the fixed in country locations. Several volunteer pilots have been to the region and had meetings with the local airport authorities both in Jacmel and in the North. This service is desperately needed in Haiti as road conditions are so poor.

MEDICAL DEPOT

Since the earthquake, we have been involved with the storage and distribution of medical supplies in Jacmel. Currently, the supplies at the depot are limited but we expect a new shipment soon from Direct Relief International. The Aid Matrix Foundation will provide training to workers in inventory supply and management. Calvary Chapel will be constructing a new depot in August with climate control. We are looking for a partner for funding for this essential project to continue.

BOD ME LIMBE CLINIC

Our clinic in Bod me Limbe, 90 minutes west of Cap Haitian is continuing as well. Volunteer trips will be planned there for the fall and winter. Our village programs include health instruction by Agence Sante (community health workers), microcredit program, vitamin distribution for women and children and water and sanitation initiatives.

FLOODING IN MEDICINE HAT and EAST

Dear friends, I have had many e-mails asking how we are doing with the flooding that has been happening in Medicine Hat.. I have been talking with Linda daily as I am still in Minneapolis and she advises our home and our children homes are all safe and dry on high ground... thank you to everyone for your concern and prayers.. we are all doing well... The two photo's are what Jaclyn and Daryn sent of flooding in Irving just to the east of the Hat and the flooding along the Trans Canada hwy. to the east... Got a note from Tom and he said the Highway west bound on the Trans Canada is completely washed out near Irving...this happened Saturday... long detours to get around it ...God bless you... Dear friends, We had a beautiful day for a marathon here in Minneapolis ... over 600 runners participated in the fund raiser for Kids Against Hunger...hosted by Urban Refuge and Evergreen Churches.... this is the food that will be shipped to us in Haiti for our feeding program in our schools... the winning time for the 10K run was Jacob Henderson in a time of 33.min 41sec. at a pace of a 5:26 mile and the winning female runner was
Sarah McFalls at a time 38:55 min. at a pace of 6:16.... this is the photo on the left... the top male for the 5 K. was Sam Omann at a time of 17:37 at a 5:40 pace and the top female was Emilly Willenbring at a time of 20:20... at a pace of 6:33 .... the plaques presented were mud cookies that Chad bought in Jacmel the last time he was there and had them kilned and placed on the plaque... it was a great job done by all to put this event on... special thanks to Pastors Chad and Tim.... amazing job done by Randy... MEDICAL CLINIC AND MUCH MORE FOR CHABIN

Dear friends... We received such good news from a dear friend Dr. Tiffany just the other evening...Dr. Tiffany's organization is Haiti Village Health... check our link to her web site on our web.... she has arranged for a clinic to be build up at our property in Chabin... this has been a dream of ours for some time now... this is amazing and so needed in this area of Haiti... we hope to have the clinic completed sometime in August.. she will be supplying a Haitian Dr. and nurse to operate the clinic which will having birthing rooms, examination rooms, dental room, pharmacy, waiting room and washroom facilities for patients and staff... the facility will be located on the corner of our property right close to the highway for easy access... the birth death rates are extremely high in Haiti... this will help so much as it will not only be a birthing place but a place for teaching the mothers through their pregnancy and after their give birth in raising their children...Dave Bird from Calvary Chapel Churches from the States will be construction foreman and engineer for this project... Dave and his teams have been a huge help for us since the earth quakes... he will be in the country for at least a year helping with rebuilding and helping organizations like our rebuild.... they have been such a blessing already...the photo shows where the clinic will be built...
We are still in need for funds for materials for most of our rebuilding projects... we have much help in the manpower... lumber is at $1. per ft. for 2x4's and cement is over $10 per bag...
we are back home on Wed. the 9th...

Dear friends, It was our first time to feed the children at Chabin food from Prairie Gleaners of Medicine Hat... the general feeling was thumbs up ... PROGRESS ON DOME

MEETING WITH MAYOR AND FAMILY

Dear friends, We had the honor meeting with the Mayor of Jacmel and his family today... they have been blessed with their first child 2 mons. ago... they have been good friends and very supportive of our mission in Haiti.... he was very candid about the challenges he has faced since the earthquake.. for example he has only had one call from Port au Prince Government officials.. there has been no financial support in any way... he is running for Senator for the next elections... the girls had as much time as they needed for the interview... watch Chat TV and read the interview in the Medicine Hat News sometime in a week or so... we haven't had any rain in Jacmel since our arrival last Tuesday... A DAY AND LIFE IN HAITI

Dear friends... we are all well here in Haiti.. just an example of a day in a life of a Haitian family... This is Nixon's family, Nixon does some interpreting for me at times.. I learned that he was being forced out of his house because he could not pay the rent...his house is only a 10 ft. by 10ft shack, one small room for a growing family of four, plus a dog ... The cost of rent is only $100 U.S. for 6 months, but it has been so difficult for Nixon to find work ... I felt to help him and then asked what was going to happen six months from now when his rent was due - he does some teaching of music but does not earn enough to support his family. I asked him what his dream was and he said he and his wife dream of owning a restaurant one day... he had a location in mind on a main street in Jacmel and the cost to set up would only be $300. We went over his action plan and in return we gave him a micro loan... we were able to do this because of the support of Pastor Daniel and his team who were here and gave us extra money for their stay to do with it where it was needed the most... this was a perfect match as he will now be able to support his family.. .his loan would be paid back in 16 months... It was so gratifying to see the way Nixon's face lit up when he found out we would be able to help him. HELPING MOTHERS WITH DELIVERIES

Dear friends... here are friends that I met when here in Jan. that are helping mothers with their babies... they are doing a wonderful work and are a huge help... top picture is of the dome building they put up... inside picture and brand new baby with the mother and the helper that helped with the delivery... well done... this would be a great complex for a school... earthquake proof and hurricane proof... cost to purchase, ship and put up is about $29,000... Dear friends... we had a safe trip into Haiti... it is wonderful to see the children and staff.... many are the first time I have seen them since the earthquake... we have had to move the children that were going to our Jacmel school to temporary facilities at our orphanage... we are still praying for support to come in to purchase land to build a new school in Jacmel... photo back row from the left is Evan from Kansas, Illinois training our staff to build a cement dome house..PROFESSIONALS INTERNATIONAL... May 31st. depart for Haiti... team from the Hat will be Rylee Carlson from Chat T.V. and Amanda Stevenson from the Medicine Hat News... we will be meeting others from the States along with Pastor Daniel from the above church and two of his board members.. we have a full schedule for the week that we will be there... our containers are to be arriving while we are in Haiti.. one container from Medicine Hat full of food and tents and the other from Winkler filled with reconstruction supplies and equipment...

Please pray for a safe trip and that the rioting will stop... stay tuned for further posts as often as we can get on the internet... Return on the 9th of June...

The needs are still huge and help is still desperately needed... please we need to hear from you today if you can help in any way financially... together we can make a difference...

LATEST UPDATE FROM HAITI

Dear friends, As we prepare to go back to Haiti we have some very difficult challenges in our path... I had posted awhile back when I was in Haiti that I had heard rumors that riots would break out in May and was hoping they would not come to pass... there were riots even in Jacmel today which is unheard of... many fires and rocks thrown through windows...there were also riots in Port au Prince and some people were shot and killed... this is something that probably won't make the news over here... It looks like there is a group of people trying to overturn the Government...

...there is a little cement getting in but the price has gone up several dollars per bag...

...it looks like the UN has decided not to move families up to our property in Chabin as they feel it is too far from the city... we just want to help where ever we can...we do have many plans for development of this property whether they move or not... things could change as things seem to fluctuate from day to day...

....Rylee from the TV station and Amanda from the News Paper will be traveling with me to Haiti on this trip...they will have many stories to report when they get back to the Hat... we will be meeting several other people coming in to help with our projects from Canada and the States...

....as soon as we get the wiring finished at the orphanage and electricity hooked up, the orphans will move back into the house... it will be such a blessing for them to not have to sleep outside ... it has been a long haul... we have a team from the States that have been helping with this...

We need your continued financial support and prayers... we hope to have 56 schools open with 13,000 students this fall... this will only happen if we can raise the money... if your business, church group, school or family are looking for areas to help in financially, here are a few examples...

We are still in need of funds to purchase land in Jacmel to relocate our school... $75,000.
We are still in need of a large tent that would hold about 2000 people for our Jacmel location.

We are in need to raise funds for the shipping of food and transportation of the food
once it gets to Haiti... $80,000. for 4,000,000 meals....

The cinder block plant is close to completion... the walls are finished... the steel gates are being built.. we are not able to get enough cement to build the foundation for the equipment as yet but hopefully soon. ... I will post pictures when I return to Haiti...
